Nach einem blutigen Konflikt ist Zypern seit mehr als 50 Jahren geteilt: in die "Türkische Republik Nordzypern" und die international anerkannte "Republik Zypern" im Süden. Grund sind Spannungen zwischen griechischen und türkischen Zyprioten sowie Griechenland und der Türkei.Doch seit 2025 ist eine Lösung des Zypernkonflikts wieder realistischer: Beide Volksgruppen werden von Wiedervereinigungs-Befürwortern regiert.
Während des Irankriegs 2026 schlugen Drohnen auf der Mittelmeerinsel ein und rückten Zypern und seine Bedeutung für die Sicherheit der Europäischen Union wieder ins Rampenlicht.
