Why is Zelensky asking India to stop buying Russian oil? And can India’s energy trade with Russia really influence the Ukraine war?
In this video, we decode Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s latest remarks on India’s Russian oil purchases, his argument that Russia depends heavily on major energy buyers such as India, China and Turkey, and the wider geopolitical implications for the Russia-Ukraine war.
The discussion comes shortly after US President Donald Trump signed the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026, giving the US administration authority to impose tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian oil and gas.
We explain why India buys Russian crude oil, how Russian oil became an important part of India’s energy basket, why New Delhi continues to emphasise energy security, and how US sanctions and tariff pressure could affect India-Russia relations.
Recent data shows that India’s Russian oil imports fell 16.5% in August 2026 to around 2.1 million barrels per day, while preliminary September figures point to another decline. Russia nevertheless remained India’s largest oil supplier.
The video also examines:
• Zelensky’s latest statement on India and Russian oil
• Why Ukraine wants major Russian oil buyers to reduce purchases
• India-Russia oil trade explained
• Trump’s 100% tariff power on Russian energy buyers
• US sanctions on Russia and their implications for India
• India’s energy security and dependence on imported crude
• Russia’s dependence on energy revenues
• India’s strategic autonomy and foreign policy
• Russia-Ukraine war and global energy geopolitics
• What this means for India-US relations
• Why Russian oil remains important for India
This topic is especially important for UPSC CSE Current Affairs, International Relations, Indian Economy, Energy Security, India-Russia Relations, US-India Relations and Geopolitics.
