Warren Jeffs became the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), a breakaway polygamous religious group historically based around the Utah–Arizona border.
After becoming the group's leader in 2002, Jeffs gained extraordinary control over the lives of his followers. U.S. Department of Justice records describe strict rules, excommunication, control over marriages and families, and the use of church structures to enforce the group's authority.
Jeffs eventually became a fugitive after authorities issued a warrant connected to allegations involving minors. He was placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list and was captured in 2006.
In 2011, a Texas jury convicted him of sexually assaulting two underage girls. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years. As of 2026, he remains incarcerated and is not eligible for parole until 2038.
But the story goes far beyond Warren Jeffs himself.
