James Cleverly Announces 2028 London Mayoral Bid, Leaves Shadow Cabinet
In major UK political news, senior Conservative politician James Cleverly has announced that he is leaving the UK shadow cabinet to focus on his bid to become Mayor of London in the 2028 election.The former foreign secretary and current Member of Parliament said he wants to help build a London that is more affordable, aspirational and business-friendly.
Cleverly argued that London’s reputation has slipped in recent years, both within the UK and internationally, while too many of the capital’s problems have been allowed to continue.
He said he will now campaign from the backbenches and focus fully on his mayoral bid. His plans include reducing the cost of building homes and running businesses while removing barriers that he believes prevent people from reaching their potential.
Cleverly also criticised the government’s approach to London, accusing it of treating the capital primarily as a source of money rather than supporting its potential.
The Conservative politician grew up in London and previously served on the London Assembly before becoming an MP in May 2015. He has held several senior government positions, including foreign secretary, home secretary and education secretary.
