Previously we have covered the Rise of the British East India Company (https://youtu.be/_SHhiEISRrE) and how the conquest of India started (https://youtu.be/HTUbi3h7-4g). In the early 19th century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh supposedly looked at a map of India and saw nearly the entire subcontinent marked red for British possessions. His grim prediction — that one day it would all be red — would soon become reality. This video traces how the British East India Company expanded from Bengal into the rest of India, using war, diplomacy, corporate lobbying, and internal divisions among Indian powers to build one of history’s most extraordinary private empires. We begin with the Company’s impact on Britain itself, from Bengal’s wealth and cotton to the Industrial Revolution, the Bengal Famine, corporate crisis, government bailouts, and parliamentary influence. Then we follow the brutal Anglo-Mysore Wars against Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, whose armies and rocket artillery posed one of the greatest threats to British rule. Finally, we turn to the Maratha Confederacy, the most powerful post-Mughal force in India, and show how British intervention, the Treaty of Bassein, Wellesley’s victory at Assaye, and repeated Maratha disunity allowed the Company to dominate central India before turning toward the Sikh Empire and the Punjab.
