Why Are Indians Selling Less Gold Despite Record Prices? | Vantage on Firstpost | 4K

Gold has long been a symbol of savings, security and financial stability for Indian households. But with gold prices near record highs, Indians are increasingly choosing to borrow against their gold rather than sell it. The World Gold Council says net gold recycling fell to just 19 tonnes in the April-June quarter, the lowest level in 11 quarters. At the same time, retail gold loans from banks surged 105 percent year-on-year to around ₹5.1 lakh crore by May, while gold loans from NBFCs rose 70 percent to ₹3.3 lakh crore. Why are Indians holding on to their gold while using it as collateral for loans? Watch this video to know more.

Meanwhile, India has delivered a fresh cartographic response to China’s repeated claims over Arunachal Pradesh. India has officially assigned 27 names to locations in the northeastern state, in a move seen against the backdrop of the long-running India-China territorial dispute. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as “Zangnan”, or southern Tibet, while India has consistently rejected the claim and maintained that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral and inalienable part of the country. So, what do these 27 names signify? Is India’s latest move a direct response to China’s ongoing “map war”? In this episode of Vantage, we examine India’s official mapping of Arunachal Pradesh, China’s territorial claims and the wider geopolitical contest along the India-China border.

From Indians leveraging their gold without giving up ownership to India pushing back against China’s territorial claims, both stories highlight how economic choices and geopolitical strategies are shaping India’s changing landscape. Watch this episode of Vantage to know more.
