Sunak gestand die Niederlage ein und erklärte am frühen Morgen, er übernehme die Verantwortung für das schlechte Abschneiden. "Die Labour-Partei hat diese Parlamentswahl gewonnen, und ich habe Sir Keir Starmer angerufen, um ihm zu seinem Sieg zu gratulieren", sagte der Regierungschef. Die Briten hätten ein ernüchterndes Urteil gefällt. "Heute wird die Macht auf friedliche und geordnete Weise und mit gutem Willen auf allen Seiten übergeben. Das sollte uns allen Vertrauen in die Stabilität und die Zukunft unseres Landes geben", sagte Sunak.
Der Regierungswechsel wird in Großbritannien rasch vollzogen. Zur Machtübergabe kommt es, sobald das amtliche Ergebnis feststeht. Schon im Laufe des Tages dürfte Starmer von König Charles III. mit der Regierungsbildung beauftragt werden und anschließend bei einer Rede in der Downing Street seine Vision für Großbritannien darlegen.
