EU-Kommissionspräsidentin von der Leyen hat sich dafür ausgesprochen, Kanada eng an die Europäischen Union zu binden. Das Land könnte das erste assoziierte Mitglied der EU werden, sagte sie in einer Rede im Europaparlament in Straßburg. Von der Leyen kündigte an, auf dem bestehenden Freihandelsabkommen Ceta aufzubauen und eine umfassendere Allianz für die Zukunft zu schaffen. Diese Kooperation solle einen gemeinsamen Raum für Wohlstand und wirtschaftliche Sicherheit bilden, erklärte die Kommissionspräsidentin. Von der Leyen richtete den Vorschlag während ihrer Ansprache zur Lage der Europäischen Union direkt an Kanadas Ministerpräsidenten Carney, der als Gast zugegen war.
