Il paragone tra i reparti di un market e la spesa militare serve a evidenziare un punto chiave: l’Europa non è competitiva nemmeno nella difesa. Il carro armato Leopard 2 A8 tedesco costa 29 milioni di euro, mentre il T-90 russo ne costa 4, e il cinese 99 Alfa solo 2,3 milioni. Non va meglio per l’artiglieria: il semovente PZH2000 tedesco ne costa 17, contro i 3 milioni del K9 coreano. "Aumentare la spesa militare al 5% o al 3,5% del PIL in queste condizioni non ha alcun senso", insiste, "se prima non recuperiamo competitività energetica ed economica".
