When the Great Depression devastated the German economy, Hitler exploited public anger and insecurity, turning a complicated national crisis into a story with one convenient scapegoat. But his ideology contained glaring contradictions. Jewish soldiers had fought and died for Germany, and Hitler himself had known and respected Jewish people. None of that stopped him from portraying millions of individuals as a single racial and political enemy. Once the Nazis took power, propaganda, censorship, and the Nuremberg Laws transformed antisemitic beliefs into government policy. Persecution escalated into deportation, mass shootings, and industrialized murder. At the 1942 Wannsee Conference, Nazi officials coordinated the implementation of a genocide already underway.
