We live in a hyper-connected world where, hour after hour, we are bombarded with data that we mistakenly treat as information. The digital world has now amplified this phenomenon, capturing our attention for purposes that are sometimes unscrupulous. Caught up in this glut of data, we lose our footing; we get lost in the multitude of choices presented to us and in sometimes contradictory signals. The mental load grows heavier, choices become complicated, our dependence increases, and our vigilance wanes. What can we do to take back the reins? To extricate ourselves from this turmoil and regain control of our thoughts, our choices, our lives, and our humanity? Emmanuel Goffi is an ethicist specializing in the ethical implications of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and defense innovation. A professor of ethics at ISEP and an international consultant, he advises public institutions and private organizations on navigating the societal challenges posed by rapid technological change. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
