En 1945, à la sortie de la Shoah, les tribunaux rabbiniques sont confrontés à un drame immense : celui des femmes 'Agounot, dont le mari a disparu sans preuve certaine de son décès. Sans certitude, elles ne peuvent pas se remarier selon la Halakha. Parmi les survivants se trouvent Rav Ya'akov Avigdor et sa famille. Lors de la séparation dans les camps, le Rav n'a le temps de lancer qu'un seul ordre à son fils aîné : « Avraham, prends soin d'Its'hak ! » Les deux frères survivent ensemble jusqu'à la Libération. Dans un camp de réfugiés en Italie, ils retrouvent une jeune femme de leur ville qui cherche encore son mari. Les deux frères savent qu'il a été assassiné. Malgré son refus de penser au remariage, Its'hak comprend qu'un jour elle pourrait avoir besoin d'une preuve. En pleine nuit, sans rien lui dire, il rédige et glisse discrètement dans son sac un témoignage signé attestant de la mort de son mari. Quelques mois plus tard, la jeune femme souhaite se remarier.
