In his latest Time interview, President Trump said certain levels of inflation will pay off America's $40 trillion debt very rapidly. He is not the only one making the case. Mohamed El-Erian told the Fed to keep promising 2% while gradually raising the acceptable ceiling to 3, and Olivier Blanchard argued for a 3% target back in 2023.
Others are warning about where this leads. J.P. Morgan Private Bank's 2026 Outlook described policymakers deliberately tolerating higher inflation to shrink the government's debt burden, and called that financial repression. Janet Yellen warned that the temptation to rely on inflation to reduce the debt burden will surely grow.
