SOMA Review 2025 - 10th Anniversary Retrospective

A no-spoilers* review/critique/analysis of SOMA, 10 years later. Often considered one of the best video games of all time on account of its deeply engrossing science fiction, existential horror story that explores philosophical themes of identity, consciousness, and what it means to be human, in what many consider to be a perception-altering, life-changing experience. When I played it originally, I remember enjoying the story quite a bit, but found a lot of the gameplay to be underwhelming, especially with it being marketed as a survival-horror game by Frictional Games (known for the Penumbra and Amnesia series). So I certainly didn't consider it to be a flawless masterpiece like it's often hyped up to be. Still, it stood out as particularly memorable in my mind, to the point that I was still recommending it to friends and family as recently as a few months ago. With its 10-year anniversary approaching and the game's subject matter on my mind as of late, I figured it was worth replaying to see how well it holds up nowadays, and if SOMA is still as good as I remember it being.

* SOMA is best enjoyed going into it completely blind. This review has minor spoilers for early plot points, but does not spoil any major twists or reveals.
