Japan turned Rabaul into a Pacific fortress. The Allies chose to cut it off. This full-length World War II documentary follows the climax of Operation Cartwheel, as American, Australian and New Zealand forces close the ring around Japan's most important base in the South Pacific. Follow the Marines onto Bougainville and Cape Gloucester, the naval clashes at Empress Augusta Bay and Cape St George, and the carrier raids that battered Rabaul. In New Guinea, Australian troops fight through Sattelberg, Wareo and the razorback heights of Shaggy Ridge, while amphibious landings threaten Japanese supply lines and escape routes. From the Treasury Islands and Choiseul to Arawe, Saidor, the Green Islands and the Admiralties, discover how each operation brought the Allies closer to isolating Rabaul. The campaign culminates in fierce Japanese counterattacks on Bougainville, the struggle for Manus and the Australian advance into Madang. Explore the tactics, command decisions, air power and logistics behind this ambitious offensive. Jungle terrain, disease and stubborn defenses made every advance costly. Yet capturing the strongest position was no longer necessary: the Allies could bypass it and keep moving toward the Philippines. Watch how Operation Cartwheel broke the Bismarck Barrier and transformed the war in the Pacific.
