У Австралии одна из самых длинных и впечатляющих береговых линий на Земле, но ее огромный тропический северный берег остается одним из самых малонаселенных обитаемых регионов планеты. Пока миллионы австралийцев спокойно живут в южных мегаполисах вроде Сиднея и Мельбурна, север страны — красивый, но суровый край, крайне недружелюбный к развитию крупных городов. Регион расположен прямо в разрушительном «поясе циклонов» Южного полушария, поэтому его постоянно накрывают катастрофические штормы. Насколько это страшно, стало ясно в 1974 году, когда циклон «Трейси» буквально уничтожил 70% Дарвина. Но смертельно опасная экстремальная погода — не единственная проблема: этот северный край страдает от древних, истощенных почв, из-за которых масштабное сельское хозяйство почти невозможно, а еще от гигантских приливов, смертельно опасных гребнистых крокодилов и удушающей муссонной жары.
