Mont Saint Michel: The Unconquered Fortress of God?

#places #geography #montsaintmichel
away in a remote corner of France is one of the country’s foremost national treasures: Mont-Saint-Michel [Mon-San-Mihshelle]. A splendid mixture of natural beauty and man-made ingenuity, the Mount has been many things over the course of the last 1,000 years: from monastery to pilgrimage site, from unconquered fortress to national prison. Today it is one of France’s most popular tourist attractions: the destination for millions of visitors from across the globe. In this modern world we live in, Mont-Saint-Michel looks like something out of a fantasy story: in fact, it has served as inspiration for numerous fictional universes, from Lord of the Rings to The Walking Dead. In recent years, a new struggle has emerged surrounding the Mount: the battle to preserve it, and its picturesque natural environment, in order to ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy this breathtaking (not to mention sacred) place.
