The Illusion of Success | Mahesh Lakhwani | TEDxAJ Science College Youth
What if the biggest obstacle to growth is not failure, but the desire to look successful? In a world that values achievements, certificates, titles, and recognition, many young people spend years chasing accomplishments without ever questioning whether they are actually moving in the right direction.
In this TEDx talk, Mahesh Lakhwani shares his journey from seeking validation and applause to discovering a deeper sense of purpose, learning, and direction. Through experiences in robotics, engineering, and student leadership, he reflects on how easily attention can be confused with excellence and activity with progress.
From following tutorials to build robots, to designing his own drone, he explores how a shift in mindset changes not only what we build, but how we think.
This talk challenges a simple belief that success is about looking impressive.
What if success is really about becoming useful? Mahesh Lakhwani is a young innovator, student leader, and technology enthusiast who believes that curiosity becomes powerful when it leads to understanding. He is a member of the Child Advisory Panel of the National Commission on the Rights of Child, where he contributes to discussions focused on youth participation and child rights.
Alongside his work in technology and robotics, he has engaged with several social and community focused organizations including The Citizens Foundation, SIUT (Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation), WWF Pakistan, and Ujala. Through these engagements, he has been exposed to themes of education, healthcare, environmental awareness, and community development, which have shaped his perspective on responsibility and impact.
His journey in technology began at the age of 12 with a Bluetooth controlled car. What started as a simple experiment grew into a deeper interest in robotics, electronics, and engineering. Over time, he worked on various hands-on projects including obstacle avoiding robots, automation based systems, and other STEM builds. By the age of 15, he progressed to designing and building his own drone and model airplane, shifting from following instructions to independent problem solving.
Alongside his technical and social experiences, he continues his passion project Tech_Looom, focused on creativity, innovation, and learning by doing.
Through his journey, he has come to believe that real growth is not about appearing successful, but about becoming genuinely useful. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx Receive SMS online on sms24.me
