SOUTH KOREA'S MARKET CRASH: COULD THE U.S. BE NEXT?
South Korea's stock market recently suffered its fastest and largest decline on record after falling more than 20% in just a few weeks. The concern is that many of the same ingredients behind that crash now exist in the United States, including heavy AI concentration, record valuations, rising leverage, and widespread investor optimism.
WHAT CAUSED KOREA'S COLLAPSE
The KOSPI had become heavily concentrated in just two semiconductor companies, Samsung and SK Hynix, which accounted for more than half the index. After regulators approved leveraged single-stock ETFs, retail investors poured billions into products that magnified gains and losses. When regulators later warned the market had become overheated, selling accelerated. Falling stock prices forced leveraged funds to sell even more shares, creating a self-reinforcing downward spiral that quickly erased months of gains.
WHY INVESTORS ARE COMPARING THE U.S.
The U.S. market shares several characteristics with Korea. The largest ten companies now account for roughly 37% of the S&P 500, technology dominates the index, valuations rank among the highest in history, and margin debt has climbed to record levels. Professional investors also hold unusually low cash balances, while corporate insiders are selling shares at an elevated pace. Although none of these factors guarantees a decline, they suggest the market is increasingly dependent on a relatively small group of companies continuing to perform exceptionally well.
THE BULL CASE
Wall Street remains broadly optimistic. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Citi, and several other major firms still expect the S&P 500 to finish the year higher, driven primarily by strong corporate earnings and AI-related investment. Earnings growth has remained robust, most companies continue beating expectations, market leadership has broadened beyond the largest technology stocks, corporate buybacks remain strong, and credit markets show few signs of financial stress. Unlike the dot-com era, today's largest technology companies generate enormous profits while funding AI expansion largely from existing cash flow rather than speculative financing.
THE BEAR CASE
The risks remain substantial. Current valuations assume near-perfect execution, continued AI monetization, strong earnings growth, stable interest rates, and no recession. If earnings disappoint even modestly or valuation multiples simply return toward historical norms, stocks could experience significant declines without a financial crisis. Rising oil prices, elevated leverage, record margin debt, and limited cash available to buy future dips could amplify any correction through forced selling. Several strategists continue forecasting meaningful downside under less favorable economic scenarios.
IS AMERICA LIKE KOREA?
There are important differences. The U.S. market is far more diversified, supported by institutional investors, pension funds, global capital, and automatic retirement contributions. While concentration is elevated, it is nowhere near Korea's dependence on just two companies, and leveraged single-stock products remain a much smaller portion of the overall market. Those structural differences make a Korea-style collapse less likely, even if the market experiences a significant correction.
THE MAIN TAKEAWAY
The lesson is not that America will repeat Korea's crash. It is that concentration, leverage, and investor euphoria can quickly turn a healthy rally into a painful selloff. Rather than trying to predict the next correction, the more durable strategy is maintaining an emergency fund, avoiding leverage, diversifying across multiple asset classes, and staying invested for the long term. Even if markets become volatile, history suggests disciplined investors who avoid panic and continue investing have consistently produced the best long-term results.
