GERD Dispute: Egypt Blames Ethiopia's Dam for Sudan Floods, Rising Nile Waters | Firstpost Africa
Egypt has accused Ethiopia of triggering floods in Sudan after opening the gates of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which was inaugurated last month. Cairo described Ethiopia’s management of the dam as “reckless and irresponsible,” claiming it caused extensive damage to agricultural lands and villages in Sudan. Addis Ababa has dismissed the allegations, saying the floods were caused by rising water levels in the White Nile and that the dam may have actually prevented greater destruction. The dispute has heightened regional tensions, with repeated international mediation efforts failing to resolve the issue, leaving Egypt, Ethiopia, and Sudan at odds over Nile water management.---
