Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, one of South Asia’s most influential and controversial political figures, has passed away at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and three-time Prime Minister of Bangladesh had been under intensive care for several weeks, battling multiple health complications including liver cirrhosis, heart and lung infections, diabetes, and kidney issues.
Born in 1945 in Jalpaiguri, British India, Khaleda Zia rose from humble beginnings to become the first female prime minister of Bangladesh, following the assassination of her husband Ziaur Rahman, the founder of the BNP and a key figure in the country’s independence movement. After assuming leadership of the party in the 1980s, she guided the BNP to a landslide victory in the 1991 general elections, restoring parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh. Her government was credited with introducing key reforms, including the caretaker government system to ensure fair elections, and major initiatives in education, women’s empowerment, and foreign investment.
Khaleda Zia’s political career was marked by her bitter rivalry with Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh’s current prime minister and daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The two women, often referred to as the “Battling Begums,” defined Bangladeshi politics for decades through cycles of elections, protests, and alliances. Despite her imprisonment and years of political suppression, Khaleda remained a symbol of resistance and democracy for millions of supporters who saw her as a defender of civilian rule against authoritarianism.
World leaders, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have expressed deep condolences, acknowledging her pivotal role in strengthening Bangladesh–India relations and her contributions to regional peace and stability. As the nation mourns, many reflect on her legacy of resilience, reform, and political courage — a legacy that shaped Bangladesh’s path to democracy.
