In his TEDx talk, Nick Thomas explores the power of inversion—both literal and metaphorical—as a catalyst for creativity, innovation, and personal transformation. Drawing from his unique journey as a software engineer turned professional juggler, Nick illustrates how flipping perspectives can open entirely new dimensions of possibility in both art and life.

At the heart of his talk is a deceptively simple juggling trick known as the inverted box. First discovered in the early 2000s, this variation of a century-old juggling pattern sparked a wave of innovation within the juggling community. Unlike the traditional “box” pattern, where one ball travels horizontally, the inverted version reimagines the pattern by throwing that ball over the top, requiring precision, timing, and a willingness to break the mold. That one shift in thinking led to new techniques, new patterns, and even adaptations involving four balls instead of three.

Using this as a metaphor, Nick challenges the audience to examine how we approach problems and patterns in our own lives. What happens when we stop following the “standard box” and try throwing something over the top instead? By sharing stories from both his tech and juggling careers, Nick invites listeners to reconsider assumptions, embrace experimentation, and find new freedom in the unexpected.

This talk is a celebration of creative thinking, embodied movement, and the surprising ways in which flipping our viewpoint—sometimes quite literally—can lead to transformation. Thomas is a graduate from Michigan Technological University, he also has a background in software engineering. He combines world-record breaking juggling skills with an engaging sense of humor to create moments that captivate, entertain, and inspire. He was featured on ABC's "The Gong Show."
