Namun pada tanggal 16 Juni 1946, DIS ditangguhkan karena situasi politik dan keamanan yang mengalami kekacauan.
Pencopotan ini pun membuat Keraton Surakarta dan Pura Mangkunegaran kehilangan hak otonom dan berubah fungsi jadi tempat pengembangan seni budaya Jawa.
Bubarnya DIS kemudian jadi awal dibentuknya Karesidenan Surakarta yang terdiri dari Kota Surakarta, Kabupaten Karanganyar, Kabupaten Sragen, Kabupaten Wonogiri, Kabupaten Sukoharjo, Kabupaten Klaten, dan Kabupaten Boyolali.
Namun status Karesidenan Surakarta ini tak berlangsung lama kemudian diubah jadi Daerah Pembantu Gubernur Jawa Tengah untuk wilayah Surakarta
Tanggal 16 Juni pun ditetapkan sebagai Hari Jadi Pemerintah Kota Surakarta.
