La riunione dei leader europei si è tenuta la sera del 18 dicembre. Conclusioni? L'Europa sosterrà l'Ucraina concedendo 90 miliardi di euro per il biennio 2026-2027. Il prestito sarà finanziato tramite emissione di debito comune UE sui mercati finanziari. Una via alternativa scelta dall'UE dopo il mancato assalto agli asset russi. "Non lasceremo il Consiglio Europeo finché non ci sarà una soluzione", ha detto la presidente di Commissione Ursula von der Leyen prima del vertice. Lo stesso non ha potuto dire/fare nella plenaria di mercoledì in occasione delle dichiarazioni sul Consiglio europeo.
La presidente della Commissione europea, in aula a Strasburgo, ha tenuto il discorso iniziale della discussione ("Preparazione della riunione del Consiglio europeo del 18 e 19 dicembre 2025, in particolare la necessità di sostenere l'Ucraina, le relazioni transatlantiche e l'autonomia strategica dell'UE"). Von der Leyen ascolta una manciata di interventi - perlopiù favorevoli - poi abbandona l'aula prima dell'intervento del deputato di ESN (Europa delle Nazioni Sovrane), Tomasz Froelich.
