Big tech is stifling democracy. How do we fight back? | Alexis Crews

Power over democracy is increasingly negotiated in closed-door meetings between governments and technology companies, not just at the ballot box. Drawing on first-hand experience advising platforms and policymakers in high-stakes environments, Alexis Crews exposes this “Invisible War” over algorithms, surveillance, and “safety”—and shows how leaders and citizens together can build practical guardrails that protect people, strengthen institutions, and keep democracy a shared project in the digital age.

Alexis Camille Crews is a technology governance and democracy strategist who advises global technology companies, governments, and civil society on election integrity, surveillance, and the responsible use of AI. She has worked with organizations including Meta, Google, Accenture, and the Council on Foreign Relations, helping senior leaders design guardrails for technology in some of the world’s most politically sensitive and high-risk environments. Her work sits at the intersection of power, policy, and product strategy—focusing on how institutions can anticipate geopolitical risk, strengthen public trust, and protect democratic norms in an era of fragmented regulation.
