Starmer sends fighter jets to Qatar as UK evacuates citizens amid Iran conflict
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said at a press conference that the UK’s priority is protecting British citizens as tensions escalate between the US, Israel and Iran.He acknowledged public concern over the conflict’s potential impact on security and the economy.
Starmer said the UK did not join the initial US-Israeli strikes on Iran, insisting diplomacy and a negotiated settlement over Iran’s nuclear programme remain the best path forward.
However, he said Iran’s attacks across the region require a stronger defensive response.
The UK has deployed Typhoon fighter jets, air defence systems and additional forces to bases in Cyprus and Qatar to protect British personnel and allies.
He announced four more Typhoon jets would be sent to Qatar and HMS Dragon deployed to the Mediterranean.
Starmer said British jets have already intercepted drones threatening allied bases in the region.
The government is also evacuating citizens, with thousands already returning to the UK from the Gulf.
He warned the conflict could last some time but stressed the UK would continue pushing for de-escalation and negotiations.
