Die EU soll wieder wachsen: Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz und Frankreichs Präsident Emmanuel Macron haben sich beim EU-Westbalkan-Gipfel in Montenegro für eine schnelle EU-Erweiterung stark gemacht. Neben Montenegro gehören Albanien, Bosnien und Herzegowina, das Kosovo, Nordmazedonien und Serbien zum Westbalkan. Alle sechs wollen seit vielen Jahren Mitglieder der EU werden.Macron betonte die Bedeutung der Region für die EU. Sie sei geopolitisch sehr wichtig, denn auf dem Westbalkan entscheide sich auch die Unabhängigkeit Europas, sagte er mit Blick auf Energie- und Sicherheitsfragen sowie Migrationsrouten.
