Según informan medios de comunicación citando a funcionarios estadounidenses, la Casa Blanca ha ordenado al ejército de EE. UU. que se centre casi exclusivamente en hacer cumplir lo que denomina una "cuarentena" del petróleo venezolano. Funcionarios afirman que la estrategia tiene como objetivo obligar al presidente venezolano, Nicolás Maduro, a hacer concesiones importantes y advierten que el país podría enfrentarse a una grave crisis económica a finales de enero si no se llega a un acuerdo. Anteriormente, en una sesión de emergencia del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU, Venezuela condenó la medida de Estados Unidos como la "mayor extorsión".
