Si le béton est emblématique de l'architecture moderne, son impact désastreux sur l'environnement compromet son avenir : le ciment qui le compose doit être cuit à très haute température, ce qui dégage de grandes quantités de CO2. Du béton de l'Antiquité, mélange d'agrégats et de mortier qui a notamment permis d'assurer la solidité du Colisée à Rome, à sa version en fibres de carbone, en passant par le pisé, béton de terre crue inspiré d'habitations traditionnelles d'Afrique et d'Asie, ce premier volet passe en revue les différentes solutions qui existent pour remplacer le béton tel que nous le connaissons. L'occasion de visiter d'étonnantes constructions anciennes et d'explorer les découvertes d'architectes, d'ingénieurs et de chimistes qui imaginent l'habitat du futur.
