Il Brics è stato fondato nel 2006 da Brasile, Russia, India e Cina, ai quali si sono successivamente uniti Sudafrica, Egitto, Etiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Arabia Saudita ed Emirati Arabi Uniti e conta dieci paesi partner: Bielorussia, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakistan, Malesia, Nigeria, Thailandia, Uganda, Uzbekistan e Vietnam. La sessione conclusiva di domenica è intitolata «Resilienza, innovazione, cooperazione e sostenibilità: plasmare il futuro per una crescita globale inclusiva». Il Brics ha cercato di accrescere la propria visibilità promuovendo alternative alle istituzioni finanziarie dominate dall’Occidente e posizionandosi come voce delle nazioni in via di sviluppo e delle economie emergenti. Sabato, il gruppo ha espresso preoccupazione per le crescenti tensioni in Medio Oriente e ha condannato il ricorso a sanzioni non autorizzate dalle Nazioni Unite. Ha inoltre manifestato preoccupazione per gli attacchi alle infrastrutture civili e agli impianti nucleari a fini pacifici in una dichiarazione che criticava indirettamente gli attacchi statunitensi e israeliani contro l’Iran.
