UN probe finds grounds to believe US committed war crimes in Iran

A new UN investigation says there are reasonable grounds to believe the United States committed war crimes in two air strikes on civilian sites in Iran in February, while also finding that Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during a crackdown on nationwide protests that began in December 2025. The UN mission said a US air strike on a school in Minab killed more than 150 people, most of them children, and found no evidence that the school was being used for military purposes. It reached a similar conclusion about a US air strike on a sports centre in Lamerd that killed and injured 22 civilians. The US Department of Defense says it is investigating the incidents. The investigation also accused Iranian authorities of unlawful killings, torture, persecution and other abuses during the protest crackdown. Iranian authorities say 3,117 people were killed and have attributed most of the deaths to civilians and security personnel killed by what they describe as rioters backed by foreign powers. UN investigators say the actual death toll is likely to be significantly higher, while rights groups have reported substantially higher figures, although the numbers remain difficult to verify amid an extended internet shutdown.
