Sahel Crisis Forces Mali And Algeria To Restore Ties After 15-Month Feud | Firstpost Africa | N18G

The diplomatic war between Mali and Algeria is over, at least for now. After 15 months of frozen relations, closed airspace and mutual accusations, the two neighbours have restored diplomatic ties and reopened their borders to civilian and military flights. The breakthrough comes as the security crisis across the Sahel continues to deteriorate. Terror groups linked to Al Qaeda and ISIS are expanding, attacks in northern Mali are increasing, and instability is creeping closer to Algeria's southern border. The drone incident that triggered the crisis may have divided the two countries, but worsening insecurity has forced both governments to choose pragmatism over confrontation. While ambassadors are returning and flights have resumed, the deeper disagreements over northern Mali, Russian influence and regional security remain far from resolved. This is less a reconciliation than a strategic necessity.
