China and Indonesia have conducted a joint naval exercise in waters east of Taiwan, prompting a sharp response from Taipei.Beijing says the drill is designed to improve the two navies' operational capabilities and safeguard regional stability. Taiwan, however, accuses China of using the exercise to create the impression that Beijing has jurisdiction over waters east of the island. Indonesia says the passage exercise is a routine naval tradition and is not intended for war-fighting.
But the timing matters: China has been steadily increasing its military and maritime activity around Taiwan, while Taipei is conducting its largest military exercises of the year.
