Uganda’s police deny abducting Bobi Wine amid disputed election
Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, in power for 40 years, has condemned opposition leader Bobi Wine for rejecting the presidential election results.Museveni was declared the winner with 71% of the vote, securing a seventh term, while Bobi Wine says he is in hiding after narrowly escaping a police and army raid on his home.
Police insist Wine is not under house arrest and that access to his home is possible, but roadblocks and guards are blocking visitors and supplies. Wine claims security forces have taken over his property, cutting power and surveillance cameras and vandalising the gate.
Museveni accused the opposition of trying to destabilise the country and urged calm, while Kampala has returned to normal life despite a heavy security presence in opposition areas. Catherine Soi reports from the capital.
