Das Schiff befand sich nach Angaben in internationalen Gewässern. Es ist die erste bestätigte Versenkung eines feindlichen Schiffs durch einen Torpedo seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg.
Es werde weitere Angriffswellen geben. Die Operation werde „beschleunigt und nicht verlangsamt“ und: „Irans militärische Fähigkeiten schwinden stündlich, während amerikanische Stärke zunimmt.“ Hegseth weiter: „Heute treffen weitere Bomber und Kampfjets ein. Wir werden lasergeführte Präzisionsbomben einsetzen, von denen wir fast unbegrenzte Vorräte besitzen.“
Der US-Verteidigungsminister stellte klar: Die USA hatten das Schiff versenkt. „Wir kämpfen, um zu gewinnen“, so Hegseth. Hegseth, der sich Kriegsminister nennt, erinnerte auch an die bisher im Iran-Krieg gefallenen US-Soldaten („unsere Besten“) und kündigte an: „Wir werden sie rächen.“
