The answer is not just about engine power or technology, but about how an entire railway system is designed, operated, and maintained over decades.
Indian Railways runs one of the most complex and congested rail networks in the world. Passenger trains, express services, and heavy freight trains all share the same tracks. This mixed traffic creates strict speed limits due to curve radius, track wear, axle load, braking distance, level crossings, and safety margins. Even if a train has the power to go faster, the surrounding infrastructure often does not allow it. Speed, in this case, is limited by the weakest link in the system — not the locomotive.
In contrast, France developed dedicated high-speed corridors exclusively for fast trains like the TGV. These tracks are straighter, fully fenced, have no level crossings, and use advanced in-cab signalling systems instead of traditional trackside signals. Because slow and heavy trains are kept away from these lines, French railways can safely push speeds far beyond what is possible on shared networks. This is why high speed is a system-level achievement, not just a train upgrade.
The second part of the video explains how Maglev trains work — a technology that completely removes wheels from the equation. Maglev trains float above the track using powerful magnetic fields, eliminating friction between the train and the rails. With almost no mechanical contact, energy loss is drastically reduced, allowing these trains to reach extreme speeds that conventional rail systems cannot sustain.
