💈 A Shave With The Count Like It’s The Early 1900s In Buenos Aires | Museo Barbería La Época 🇦🇷
💈 Step Back In Time To The Early 1900s For A Shave With "The Count Of Caballito" | Museo Barbería La Época 🇦🇷Museo Barbería La Época is a magnificent living barbershop museum located in the Caballito neighborhood of Buenos Aires. The moment you walk in, you feel like you have stepped back in time with the antique barber chairs, chandeliers, and even an Entel telephone booth. There are several vintage phones throughout the space, and they all work ☎️
This incredible one-of-a-kind place was founded in 1998 by Miguel Ángel Barnes, who’s known as the Count of Caballito ✨ Once you meet him, the name makes perfect sense.
Back when Miguel first shared his idea to open a traditional barbershop and start offering shaves, his wife and friends thought he was crazy!
Miguel spent 7 years preparing before opening his doors. During that time, he learned from the old school barbers who were still around a few decades ago, and he began collecting everything connected to barbering and hairdressing. Traditional barbering was fading away there at that time, but Miguel was determined to preserve the history 💈 Everything he learned from the old school barbers is now shared with other barbers.
Over time in Argentina, unisex salons became popular and Miguel felt like men had lost their space. So he wanted “to revive traditions” and have a gathering place for people to hang out, have coffee, and talk. Museo Barbería La Época became an artistic hub where there were book readings, plays, tango, and music being played on the antique French piano 🎶 There was a coffee shop connected to the space too ☕️ It wasn’t just about haircuts and shaves 💇🏻♂️ It was about community❣️
The first piece in his collection? An antique barber chair that you’ll see me seated in for the hot towel shave. Since then, his collection has grown into thousands of items, and what you see now is only a part of it.
Miguel shared a story about an English antique dealer who once came to the shop and wanted to buy it all. At the time, the shop was fairly new and Miguel was having some financial stress. So he told the interpreter that he didn’t want any offers translated because he didn’t want to be tempted. However, the interpreter said the dealer would leave a blank check and let Miguel decide how much he would sell everything for! In the end, Miguel said no because he believed his museum collection had to stay in Argentina 🇦🇷
When children come to visit his barbershop museum, he always encourages them “to dream big about what they want to be in the future.” 🫶🏼
