Darrin Hancock Wins the 1990 McDonald's All-American Slam Dunk Contest

Darrin Hancock took a slightly more complicated path to the NBA than a number of his McDonald's All-American contemporaries. After averaging 30 points and 9 rebounds for Griffin High School (Georgia), Hancock's suboptimal grade-point-average prevented him from fulfilling his commitment to UNLV, a team coming off of a 1990 NCAA tournament championship run and returning the likes of Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, and Greg Anthony in hopes of a repeat in 1991.

Instead, Hancock enrolled at Garden City Community College in Kansas, where he instantly stood out as one of the premier community college players in the nation. After averaging 21.8 points and 11.7 rebounds as a sophomore, he transferred to a loaded Kansas team, where he played a supporting role for a Jayhawks squad that made a run to the Final Four before succumbing to eventual champion UNC.

Following more class and/or grade-related complications, Hancock left Kansas following his junior year and opted to play one season overseas, averaging 17.3 points and 5.4 rebounds for Maurienne of the French Pro B League.

The Charlotte Hornets selected Hancock with the 38th overall pick of the 1994 NBA Draft. He played two seasons with the club, averaging a touch under four points per game in what would turn out to be his most consistent role at the NBA level. He spent the third and final season of his NBA career split between Milwaukee, Atlanta, and San Antonio before embarking on an extensive stateside minor league basketball run through 2005.
