Governments must take action to protect journalists in Gaza: CPJ

Jodie Ginsberg, head of the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), says today’s letter calling on Israel to ensure Palestinian journalists in Gaza are protected and allow foreign reporters into the Strip marks a “turning point”.
As we reported earlier, the Media Freedom Coalition, a group of more than 50 countries partnered to defend press freedom and the safety of journalists, issued a call for accountability in deadly attacks against Gaza reporters.
“It’s extremely welcome that nearly 30 governments have signed onto this statement. There are 51 [coalition members] and we expect all 51 of those members to sign up to this statement and then to put it into action,” Ginsberg told Al Jazeera.
She explained that global pressure is growing in response to the outrage that was spurred by Israel’s targeted killing of Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif and several of his colleagues in Gaza City last week.
“I think it became clear to people, the pattern that we have been talking about for many, many months – of Israel smearing journalists, of Israel deliberately targeting journalists,” said Ginsberg, stressing that journalists are considered civilians and must be protected.
“The targeting of journalists, the targeting of media facilities, the banning of outlets like Al Jazeera, the sanctions against Israeli outlets like Haaretz, all of that is part of a systematic attempt to censor the information coming out of Gaza and control the narrative, as is the denial of foreign journalists into Gaza.”
