Pada tahun 1938, saat masih bernama Hindia Belanda, tim sepak bola kita mencetak sejarah sebagai wakil Asia pertama yang tampil di ajang Piala Dunia FIFA di Prancis. Meski kalah 0-6 dari Hungaria di babak pertama, keikutsertaan itu menandai langkah awal Indonesia di panggung dunia.
Setelah kemerdekaan tahun 1945, tim nasional Indonesia resmi terbentuk. Masa-masa awal penuh semangat kebangsaan, dengan momen bersejarah seperti menahan imbang Uni Soviet 0-0 di Olimpiade Helsinki 1956.
Namun, sejak era itu, prestasi timnas sering naik turun. Meski menjadi kekuatan regional di Asia Tenggara, seperti meraih medali emas SEA Games 1987 dan 1991, Indonesia belum berhasil menembus dominasi Asia secara konsisten.
Masuk era modern, gairah sepak bola nasional kembali membara. Generasi muda seperti Egy Maulana Vikri, Pratama Arhan, dan Marselino Ferdinan membawa harapan baru. Pada 2023, Timnas U-23 untuk pertama kalinya mencapai semifinal Piala Asia U-23 dan lolos ke babak playoff Olimpiade Paris 2024, dan ini adalah sebuah pencapaian yang belum pernah diraih sebelumnya.
Kini, Indonesia menatap masa depan dengan penuh optimisme. Perpaduan pemain lokal dan naturalisasi mulai menunjukkan hasil positif, dan Garuda kembali terbang tinggi di Asia.
