What is happening at Syria’s ISIL prisons and why it matters
Fighting around two prisons holding thousands of ISIL detainees has exposed one of Syria's most dangerous unresolved legacies.Dozens have been killed as the Kurdish-led SDF withdrew from areas it controlled for years, with Syrian government forces moving in immediately.
The SDF manages facilities holding around 60,000 people at their peak, now reduced but still including roughly 40,000 at Al Hol camp alone.
Human Rights Watch says approximately 18,000 detainees are foreign nationals from more than 60 countries, whilst most Western nations refuse to repatriate adult male fighters.
As prison guard units thin and the SDF appeals for reinforcements, experts warn the crisis remains one prison break away from catastrophe.
