Die USA sind eines der drei Austragungsländer der WM und ausgerechnet dort finden die ersten Spiele der iranischen Mannschaft in der Gruppenphase statt. Von Visa-Problemen über politische Proteste der iranischen Diaspora in den USA: Die Weltpolitik begleitet das Team auf Schritt und Tritt. So musste die Mannschaft im mexikanischen Tijuana ihr Lager beziehen und darf nur für die jeweiligen Matches in die USA einreisen. Und schon während des Auftaktspiels in Los Angeles demonstrierten zahlreiche Iran-Kritiker vor dem Stadion gegen die Führung in Teheran.
