WWF WrestleFest - Saturday Night's Main Event Tag Team 1CC
WWF WrestleFest is an arcade wrestling game from Technos, the creators of Double Dragon, River City Ransom, and various other games. This kinda feels more like a beat 'em up than a wrestling game, but it's a classic for wrestling fans who grew up in the 80s and 90s.I've been a wrestling fan for my entire life, and thinking about it, this may have been my favorite game until the N64 came out. I always loved playing this in arcades, so much so that my mother almost bought me a cabinet when a local arcade was selling theirs off, lol. I've been meaning to learn how to play this properly for years, and the news of Hulk Hogan's death was what made me finally load it up. Of course, I had to pick Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior.
Funny enough, Hogan is nowhere near the best character in this game. Mechanically, it's really restrictive. The further you get into a the game, the less likely you are to win a neutral grapple. It doesn't matter how hard you mash the buttons (I tested it with autofire... unless it's one of those games where an autofire that's set too fast actually makes it do nothing. I didn't think of that until right now, but that's probably not the case...). You're just not going to win most of the grapples after the first few matches. So the way to consistently damage your opponent is to knock them down with 4 punches, run up to their head, go to pick them up, and then immediately hit them with a running lariat when they get up. If your character doesn't have a lariat (like Hogan), then you're probably in trouble. However, Hogan does gain access to a lariat when the opponent has been weakened, so he's still usable. The Ultimate Warrior has a good moveset, so he can carry Hogan through the opening minutes of a match.
The only way to absolutely win a grapple is to pick your opponent up from the mat when they're weak. You go straight into a grapple, and from there you can either mash punch to go into a headlock (which lets you drag your opponent to the corner and let do a tag team move), press punch + a direction to do a move, or mash kick to throw them into the ropes. The only other way to always win grapples is to let your tag partner sit on the apron for a while, until they have the "POWER UP" notification above their health bar. Tag them in, and you'll win every grapple, no matter how you initiate it. Your moves may do more damage in this state too, but I dunno.
And that's the gist of it! This is a pretty simple game - I learned it and cleared it from scratch in a day - but I still wouldn't call it easy. Once you're in the "second loop" (defending the tag belts, I guess?), the matches become quite a bit harder, and if you screw up your strategy even once, you can get steamrolled with no chance of recovery. It keeps you on your toes, and that helps make it fun. The timer can be an issue too; if you let your opponents tag out and heal too much, you're in danger of running out of time (I lost a few runs to that). I really enjoyed playing this again, maybe even more than I expected to. It's still a good game.
I was a Hulkamaniac when I was a little kid, and while he's nowhere near one of my favorites nowadays, I've always been a fan of the Hulkster to some degree. Say whatever you want about him as a person, but for wrestling fans all across the world, Hogan was a legitimately larger than life character that we watched for decades. Thanks for the memories, brother.
