Malgré une campagne 2016 tournée vers la politique intérieure, Donald Trump s’implique en Afghanistan: après avoir envoyé des renforts aux armées en2017, puis conclu un cessez-le-feu en2018, le président américain entame des négociations avec les talibans et organise la signature des accords de Doha, le 29février2020, qui exige la libération de 5 000prisonniers talibans.
Une nouvelle vague de terreur submerge le pays. Après le retrait précipité des États-Unis, ordonné par Joe Biden le 14avril2021, l’armée afghane s’effondre. Le 15août2021, les talibans entrent dans Kaboul et prennent possession du palais présidentiel. Forcés à l’exil, des milliers d’Afghans cherchent à embarquer à bord des avions des États-Unis et de l’Otan lors d’une opération d’évacuation achevée le 30août2021.
