Il tema del suicidio è antico quanto l’uomo. Gli antichi filosofi stoici consideravano la scelta della propria morte come un atto di libertà razionale. Tommaso Moro nell’Utopia (1516) immagina uno Stato in cui i sacerdoti consigliano la morte volontaria ai malati incurabili. Francis Bacon nel 1605 introduce il termine euthanasia per indicare il compito del medico di rendere serena l’agonia. Ma è nel 1906 che per la prima volta un Parlamento affronta il tema. Oggi, come in passato, entrano in gioco argomenti etici e morali che toccano vari aspetti: a chi appartiene la vita umana? C’è un momento in cui la dignità umana è sopraffatta dal dolore e dalla malattia? Quanto in là si possono spingere le cure palliative? Ne discutono insieme al conduttore Simone Spetia e a Claudio Antonelli, vicedirettore di 24Ore NextMed, il giurista islamico Fabio Valerini, la professoressa Marsilia D’Amico, costituzionalista Università Milano ed esperta di bioetica e il professor Andrea Manazza, oncologo-palliativista, membro Consiglio superiore di bioetica.
