CHINA IS OVER

China’s demographic crisis is getting harder to ignore. Marriage registrations have collapsed from 13.47 million in 2013 to just over 6 million a decade later, while births have fallen to their lowest level since 1949. One major reason is financial.

In many parts of China, men are expected to provide expensive bride prices, property, and other assets before marriage. For poorer families, those costs can equal years of income. At the same time, China has tens of millions more men than women, a struggling property market, and high youth unemployment. The result is a brutal marriage market where millions of young men are being priced out entirely. And when marriages disappear, the economic effects spread quickly. From empty wedding halls and collapsing jewelry sales to closing kindergartens and falling birth rates.

China isn’t just facing a population problem, it’s facing a generation that increasingly can’t afford to start families.
