Au milieu des années 1950, les compagnies ferroviaires d’Allemagne, de France, d’Italie, de Belgique, des Pays-Bas, du Luxembourg et de Suisse lancent un projet ferroviaire inédit : les Trans-Europ-Express. Conçus pour rapprocher les nations et faciliter les échanges, ces trains transfrontaliers deviennent rapidement un symbole d’intégration européenne. Proposant uniquement des billets de première classe, ils offrent à leurs passagers un niveau de confort inégalé : wagons climatisés, service raffiné et voiture-restaurant où les plats sont préparés à la minute, séduisant les voyageurs d’affaires comme les passionnés de trains. Supplantés par l’essor de l’avion, ils disparaissent dans les années 1990 mais conservent un prestige intact jusqu’aujourd’hui.
