El 22 de julio de 2026, mientras Donald Trump amenazaba con golpear otra instalación nuclear iraní, el ministro de Energía saudí firmaba en Riad un acuerdo nuclear con Estados Unidos. Su artículo 7 lleva un título inquietante: enriquecimiento de uranio. Abre la puerta a que Arabia Saudí enriquezca uranio al 5 % y, más adelante, hasta el 20 %, justo lo que Washington lleva años intentando negarle a Irán.
Las cuentas económicas no salen. Arabia Saudí tiene la energía solar más barata del mundo, sus planes nucleares han pasado de 16 reactores a solo dos y comprar el combustible fuera costaría unos 80 millones de dólares al año. Por eso muchos analistas creen que lo que busca Riad es la «latencia nuclear»: poder fabricar la bomba en poco tiempo si Irán la consigue, como ya avisó Mohammed bin Salman.
Además, el acuerdo exige mucho menos que el que firmó Emiratos en 2009 o el que se pactó con Irán en 2015: sin Protocolo Adicional, con inspecciones solo en los sitios que elija Riad y sin límite a las reservas de uranio enriquecido.
