Artemis-Crew sicher zu Hause: Astronauten sind auf der ErdeDie historische Mission endete nach 1,1 Millionen Kilometern mitten im Pazifik – unter blauem Himmel und mit großem Aufatmen: Die Crew von Artemis 2 ist sicher zur Erde zurückgekehrt. Um 2.07 Uhr deutscher Zeit wasserte die Orion-Kapsel mit Christina Koch (47), Jeremy Hansen (50), Reid Wiseman (50) und Victor Glover (49) planmäßig vor der Küste Kaliforniens.
Die Rückkehr war spektakulär und riskant. Gegen 1.33 Uhr wurde zunächst das Servicemodul ESM abgesprengt, das zuvor Strom und Treibstoff geliefert hatte. Anschließend begann der kritischste Teil: Mit rund 40.000 km/h trat die Kapsel in die Erdatmosphäre ein. Dabei entstand ein Plasmafeld, das eine etwa sechsminütige Funkstille verursachte. Gleichzeitig musste Orion Temperaturen von bis zu 2800 Grad standhalten.
Schon Minuten vor der Wasserung hatten Hubschrauber Sichtkontakt. Die Fallschirme öffneten sich planmäßig, und die Kapsel setzte punktgenau im Wasser auf. „Eine perfekte Punktlandung“, meldete NASA-Sprecher Rob Navias. Kommandant Reid Wiseman funkte: „Was für eine Reise. Wir sind stabil.“ Erleichterung machte sich bei NASA, Angehörigen und Zuschauern breit.
Nach der Öffnung der Kapsel untersuchten Navy-Ärzte die Crew zunächst im Inneren. Gegen 3.30 Uhr verließen die Astronauten unter Jubel das Raumschiff. Geschwächt durch die Schwerelosigkeit wurden sie per Schlauchboot und Helikopter zur USS Murtha gebracht und anschließend zum Johnson Space Center in Houston geflogen. Dort folgt eine mehrwöchige medizinische Rehabilitation sowie die wissenschaftliche Auswertung der Mission.
In den kommenden Stunden ist auch das Wiedersehen mit den Familien geplant. Zudem soll es in Houston eine Pressekonferenz geben – ein erster öffentlicher Auftritt der vier Astronauten nach ihrer Mission. Klar ist: Dort werden vier gefeierte Rückkehrer sitzen.
