Las granjas agrícolas son uno de los blancos de esta brutal represión racista, ya que alrededor de dos tercios de los trabajadores agrícolas estadounidenses son inmigrantes, en su mayoría de México. A principios de julio, una redada en una granja en California tuvo consecuencias fatales cuando Jaime Alanís, de 57 años de edad, murió tras caer del techo de un invernadero. Decenas de sus compañeros de trabajo fueron arrestados y trasladados en autobuses a un centro de detención. Gran parte de las y los trabajadores agrícolas perseguidos por el Servicio de Inmigración son miembros de la Unión de Campesinos (UFW), el sindicato de trabajadores agrícolas más antiguo de Estados Unidos. Nos acompaña su presidenta, Teresa Romero, líder sindical de larga trayectoria y tanto la primera latina como la primera inmigrante en dirigir la organización. Romero señala que “los trabajadores agrícolas están aterrorizados” y plantea que “reemplazar a las personas que tienen experiencia, que son profesionales, que vienen trabajando en el sector agrícola, en algunos casos hace décadas, no es la forma de pagarles por su sacrificio y trabajo duro”. Además, destaca que “tarde o temprano, la industria agrícola va a sentir los daños”.
